Resources for Christian Parents
Our church is currently studying through Ephesians, and this coming week we come to the passage on parenting. These are Paul’s words…
“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.” Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.” (Eph. 6:1-4)
-To that end, here are some helpful resources for parents and families as we seek to lead, love, and raise our children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
1 - Parenting: 14 Gospel Principles that Can Radically Change Your Family. - Paul Tripp
-As always, Paul Tripp does an excellent job helping us to see the beauty and the application of the gospel to the very real issue of parenting and raising our children.
2 - The Disciple-Making Parent, A Comprehensive Guide for Raising Your Children to Love and Follow Jesus Christ. - Chap Bettis
A great all-around book of Gospel-centered parenting and strategies.
3 - Give them Grace, Dazzling Your Kids with the Love of Jesus. - Elyse Fitzpatrick and Jessica Thompson.
-Fitzpatrick and Thompson help us to see the beauty and hopefulness of grace-filled homes and lives, and how grace-filled parenting is one of the tools that God gives us to evangelize our children.
4 - Shepherding a Child’s Heart. - Tedd Tripp
- "Shepherding a Child's heart is about how to speak to your child's heart." Tedd Tripp's book is a very helpful, valuable resource for parents with children of any age.
5 - Standing on the Promises, A Handbook of Biblical Childrearing. - Doug Wilson
-In this book, Pastor Doug Wilson talks of how every family is a culture and community unto itself with its own traditions, customs, and assumptions. Wilson helpfully points out how the culture of our homes shapes and forms our children, while also helpfully and hopefully applying the Gospel to these realities.
6 - Disciplines of a Godly Family. - Kent and Barbara Hughes
-Kent and Barbara Hughes are faithful guides through many of life's challenges. In this helpful book, these two "present a consistent, creative, loving approach to rearing children...They draw deeply from their own years raising children...showing that rising children who honor God and others is a task well worth any parent's efforts."
